Two days ago, I attempted to flash my BIOS, to fix various problems (eg, hard disk >8GB limit, etc). It all seemed to go fine, until I rebooted. Nothing. In some ways, this is quite good - I'm finally getting around to upgrading my machine. I'll be getting an ATX case (my current one was AT), a new motherboard (that actually supports USB - my old one supported it, but didn't have any ports!) and a new processor - I went with a 1.2GHz Duron, which will be fine enough for me. So in a week hopefully, I'll have my new kit. Yay!

Anyway, I probably won't be online much for a week or so.

no, no! wait owen! the same happens to me years ago. it seems to be a cmos problem ... if you take the battery on the board out for a minute ... it maybe works again ... note: switch the computer completly off!

that has been known to be an issue with BIOS updates, the CMOS data can become corrupt or just not entirely compatible with the new BIOS rev. i guess owen probably already tried that one, but maybe not, still, either way it'll be nice to have that athlon owen

Yes, I did try that, but it didn't work. But as Phil says, it will be nice to have what could be called a fast computer!

I had a processor die of dust poisioning in December 1999... a Cyrix PR200, the same as I have now.

My stuff still hasn't come yet (but living where I do, I won't expect it for another week or so), so I won't be posting here much at all. I'll read everything when I get my new kit.

Well, some of my stuff arrived last night. I got the motherboard and the case, but not the processor. This should arrive on Monday, or tonight if I'm lucky. However, the case was damaged in transit and a large part of the front panel at the top is chipped off. I'll be getting a replacement soon. I hope I will have my system up and running by Monday night though. Fingers crossed....
