I have decided to reveal () the fact that I am working on something that I have (so far) called Seal 4 (skipped 3 for some reason ). Anyway I am spending a lot of time developing the backend and getting it all working correctly.

I am writing it in Dev-C++ on windows and will then port to DJGPP for the dos version. I use Allegro and DLX (got it working) so far. It is quite stable .

I hope to get a working demo out soon. I just want to.. how do I say provide a little life to this community

It doesn't do much at the moment - unfortunately. Getting to that

-new-

I am going to use C++ for the actual kernel/gfx/etc and some Assembly for the multitasker and other random stuff. I wonder if this will kill allegro? If so I may have to replace it with my own VESA thingy. That may give me more freedom with what I can replace (such as GDT/IDT, MM, etc..)

We will see, I guess

edit: added some more details

update: I now have a semi-working very incomplete window manager. The windows are movable and z-ordering nearly works.

Dragging windows has some minor issues (the mouse skips sometimes causing the movement to stop).

At the moment I just plan on getting it working properly. That is to have it up to being able to run user programs properly. Then I can focus on features.

>> update

Windows now work slightly better. They no longer 'drop' if the mouse skips out of them. All I need to do is get them to reorder themselves when you click on a window. Then I can get messaging and stuff working for widgets.

well that was not so bad for a newbie, was it? Mr Green

any chance that you`ll also put up the sources? even if you decide to work with Badsector (withc may be a good idea), the sources that you have may have something for others to study and learn from?

I am pretty new to C/C++ programming in general (only since mid last year) . Some of the design flaws may be just me trying to get stuff to work quickly so I can test other stuff (such as all those random windowing functions ). I really should clean all that junk up. And the colour generator only works in 32bit mode (easy to fix - just too lazy).

Anyway thanks for the comments.
