I finished my archiver today, and started working on window layout and such for the Graphical installer I am writing. When I release the installer, it will have details of the compression and archiving routines, and headers.

If anyone wants to write a program that supports the file format, there will also be technical documentation on header format, and compressed data format.

The compression isn't exactly the best, but it works as expected. I will optimize it for future releases (with a larger dictionary) for smaller output, but for now it is a very simple routine.

Development of the project as a whole is about 45% complete.

So far there are a few things to work out.
What works:

  • Archiving and Compression of files
  • Moving Dialog boxes
  • Scalable (but blocky) fonts
  • Mouse Routines
  • Buttons

What still needs to be done:

  • Fix overlapping Window bug
  • Finish integrating the Archiving routines with the GUI
  • Checkboxes for different components
  • Step-by-Step progression of install to produce a working product.

So as you can see, I still have a bit to go.

Just by wonder... why not use FreeGLIB (Free GUI LIBrary) which already does all these (Moving windows, menus in the Macintosh style, almost the best overlapped windows drawing method, complete mouse support, messaging system, different fonts in different sizes (8x8, 8x14, 8x16, and you can make your own), etc, etc) and focus to the meat (the installer)?

It's written in Turbo C 1.01, which is free and you can get it from my site at http://www.bsector.cjb.net/

and/or take a look at these screenshots:

(FreeGLIB Demo with some overlapped windows and a dialog window opened)

(An Airport Manager that i made with the welcome dialog box opened)

(A view from the menus - this one is from my FreeDESK gui for FreeDOS that i started but never finished [i will... one day]).

I'm guessing size and so on. But it shouldn't be too hard to do what Microsoft dose with Windows - have a DOS bootstrap program that copies a minimal version of SEAL to the temp directory, then starts the SEAL GUI to perform the installation.

which would still look nicer than any other method, it would also make sure that Seal worked on the system before installing, although i don't much like the idea of GUI only installer, maybe an optional text installer.
