90% am going to write:-
Sound blaster basic midi driver
Universal Mouse driver
50% am going to write:-
CD Rom Driver
assortment of disk drive and hard drive tools

pls tell me if you think any of these tools will come in handy.
also if you think it worth my time writing them, also any segestions
on other apps for seal2 you think would be good.

i have been learning low-level programming and hope to bring new
fetures to seal2 that are totaly library free.

i am also restarting work on a driver system for seal2 that can be used
the driver system will be based on sxl and will be managed by a
driver manager alowing very easy management of drivers
drivers for divices will be layed out in a certain way.

regards Leon Pegg aka iota

well i am going to write the device manager first so that all drivers i write can be regulated the same way.
i am no good at writing docs so i will just outline what the device manager will do.
the device manager will alow new hardware to be installed from within seal2 instead of using dos drivers.
it will search the system and detect starndard devices and name and give info on them.
the drivers will be self installable beaning you can just click on them and thay will install.
the driveres will use the sxl format as it is smaller and faster than xdl.

problemms i may have
i may have a problem sharing the driver function calls in the sxl with xdl's this problem should not be to hard to over come.

drivers will be able to be writen in C using every function posible to xdl's.
the device manager will not be accessable via any other app apart from the drivers meaning not function calls from the device manager will be exported.

there maybe a install driver fuction exported from the devoice manager that has not been decided yet.

if sommeone writes a driver for an unsuported device it would be segested that thay write docs about every function in the driver and what it dose so when otyher people go to write drivers for other makes of that device thay will all be unified i amm working on writing the device manager now so keep a look out for uopdates

Okey but very quickly. I explained to Leon in more detail.

By using low level languages - in this case ASM, you will have big problems with portability, and ofcourse there will be some hardware dependence. Maybe the program that searches for hardware woulde good, but the others will do problems. Allegro has sound blaster and mouse drivers and itself is portable. If we would get DLXGEN changed for SXLGEN it wouldnt be too hard to get SEAL running on Windows or Linux. Trust me i know what im talking about. You want portability - then you shouldnt use low level languages (maybe if theyre really needed and there is no other way).

Any questions?

i will say mouse is suported by allegro but it opnly uses the dos mouse drivers interupts you still need an outside driver to use allegro mouse functions. most of the stuff i am on about will not affect portablity at all.
because thay will all be unattached from seal itsself and all be apps.
also seal dose not need to be portable seal was designed to be a dos gui. u dont need any more gui's for windows or linux there are already enught.
the midi drivert i was on about is noty to replace allegros it is there for a alternat driver.

If you guys have some free time, why dont you back port the skinning engine to SEAL2.

Its relatively easy to do so, just one file and a header. skin.cc and skin.h, I think.

BTW, skin.cc has C code in it.

i would rather add new fetures and i dont have much knolage of seal2's skinging engin anyway i would reather put my knolage into making new fetures for seal2.
i would like your opinion on some things i know there is nothing wrong with allegro or the other librarys we use but i would like to try and cut down the amout of librarys used by seal2 and write are own i am prepared to do this i will start would mouse (after i finished the driver system) then on grfx i would like peoples opinion on this pls
i have already some basic compreshion routines witch i am going to builded into a sxl driver.

I don't really think it's any good idea to replace Allegro, since it's giftware anyway...

all i am saying is replace things slowly maybe the compreshjion first then bmp jpg png gif ect next and so on.
it is only to try and make seal2 more are own work and not the work of some other group i am not saying move away from allegro we can stay with that.
after i have the sxl driver system working or evan while i am working on it i will proboly try and write some alternate librarys for use
